I have been decking the halls since well before Thanksgiving, so I’m happy to finally be sharing my modern Christmas home tour! I’m equally as happy to be done decorating for the holidays. Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the festivities!
I really only decorated two rooms of our home for Christmas. I wanted to keep it natural and simple and I have a goal of keeping my Christmas decor to just one tub to store the rest of the year. We are still on track to keep that goal!
Around the beginning of November I was excited to get out my Christmas stash and see what I had to work with and was surprised to see I had a couple boxes of black and white Christmas bulbs and that was it. I had forgotten I’d sold most of my decor last year. Whoops!
So I started shopping and at first I went a little crazy. With so many houseplants, adding a tree and live greenery can look a little jungle-y. So I had to move the tree around a couple times to find a good spot for it. And I had to return a few of the holidays decorations I bought at first.
The inset around the windows seems like a perfect spot for it (and that’s where we’ve had it previous years), but it was blocking all the sunlights my plants need and seemed to take up the whole room. It’s so much better in the corner it’s in now!
I am loving how well my outdoor chairs are working in this room! They’ve become my favorite place to sit and work too! They’re super comfy. I’m not entirely sure they’ll make it back outside next summer…
That DIY wall hanging blends in perfect for the holidays, I’m glad I went with black, ivory and green :)
Because we never finished our fireplace or installed a mantel, I just hung some greenery where the mantel should be using command strips. It took a little more work than I expected to get it all to stay, so hopefully next year we have a real mantel to work with!
Since taking these pics I’ve moved the stockings closer together on the right side of the fireplace and I’m liking that look much better. As long as Santa can find them though, it’s fine.
Funny story about that white wrapping paper. I was going for a scandi look with the simple white but it turns out you can see right through it! Not ideal for concealing gifts. Some people on my facebook page suggested wrapping it in white tissue paper first. That would totally work. Or you could just go with black paper like I did last year.
And I am still loving my scandi pillow – it’s seriously my favorite! And it was so easy to make!
I feel like the greenery on the doorway ups the holiday factor by a million! So fun!
I decorated my aloe and put lights on a couple other plants. All the heart eyes! My obsession with my plants is getting a little out of hand. But I’m too far in to turn back now!
The hardest part of my holiday look was putting together the kitchen shelving look. I wanted to change it up quite a bit from what it looked like in the fall tour and just try something a little different. I ended up replacing the print with this one and I love it. This picture doesn’t do it justice. It’s gorgeous!
So there you have it, our my modern Christmas home tour! I feel like I did just enough to feel the holiday spirit without completely overhauling our home. I tried to stick to a color scheme that feels like us all year long, but also cozy for the winter months. Teal and black and white for the win…again.

I love your style! I think you’re my alter ego. I’m much further along on the age spectrum and an inveterate collector, so I will never be quite as scaled back. But I’m moving closer to peaceful simplicity. Thank you for lovely inspiration.

Thank you, Dana! I'm glad you enjoyed my home tour :) Simplicity is different to everyone and I'm not a terribly sentimental person, so scaling back comes easy to me! It's all about making room for the things you truly love!
